How to Install Triple Rate on Coil Over Shocks

How To Install Triple Rate on Coil Over Shocks

We are often asked, "Should I go Triple Rate?" And sometimes it is appropriate, but how do you justify the additional expense? Coil Over Springs often do not have enough spring travel for the shocks they are mounted on and using a "Helper Spring" in a triple rate system significantly increases total spring travel with negligible additional spring force.  While a true triple rate system is much more difficult to set up, an obvious advantage is three stages of spring force. To start, here is one method of installing triple rate on a 16" 2.0 Fox Coil Over Shock.

You'll need the shock, two main springs, an additional spring divider, and in this case a helper spring.

Cut the additional spring divider's collar down close to  3/8-1/2" and slightly round the inner edge.

Break down the coil over and remove the preload and lock rings. Assembly/Disassembly Instructions are available on this site.

Install the shortened spring divider above the secondary engagement ring(s).

Reinstall the preload and lock rings and then reassemble shock. Assembly/Disassembly Instructions are available on this site.

With the shock reassembled, install the main springs.

Reinstall the lower spring seat, the o-ring, and the retaining ring.

Make sure the lower spring seat is properly seated on the retaining ring.

If you haven't already, fill shock with nitrogen and you're done!
